Proposal Letter: Final

December 5, 2011

Marni Walden
Verizon Wireless
Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer
7000 Central Ave SW
Albuquerque, NM 87121

Dear Ms Walden,

Zero Fatalities is an educational, non-profit organization created to assist in preventing fatalities caused by phone use while driving. Since the founding of our company in 2010 we have set our to educate drivers of Utah, and nationally, of the consequences of distracted driving. Our ultimate goal is to reach “zero fatalities, a goal we can all live with.” As part of our education strategy we are trying to reach all public schools in the state of Utah by hosting informational seminars to show students the importance of hanging up their phones while driving. In partnership with your company we would like to expand these programs. Your sponsorship can help us to achieve such a goal, and in turn, your company name will be positively promoted throughout the community as a safe, responsible and concerned cell service provider. In order to accomplish the task of Zero Fatalities we are requesting your sponsorship of $1,000,000.

Sponsor appeal:
We have noticed from past sponsorships that you take pride in the organizations you select to partner with, and usually the partnership has a mutual benefit for each organization. We understand the brands values and would like to help reinforce those values and help create a positive relationship between our two companies while we jointly educate America’s youth on the dangers of driving distracted and what it means to be a responsible cell phone user.

Your sponsorship would create a great opportunity for both organizations to help achieve our goal of zero fatalities related to cell phone usage while driving. The national media coverage this type of sponsorship would be mutually beneficial letting your customers know that not only you sell a quality product but you truly are concerned for the safety of your customers. Your company prides its self on being the largest and most reliable wireless network with a commitment in providing the highest quality products an services to your customers to help them strengthen their communities. Verizon also takes a large part in charitable organizations to improve communities, locally and nationally, including but not limited to, Hopeline,Green Initiatives, and E-Rate. Zero Fatalities would make a successful addition to that list in making a positive impact to keep communities all around the world safe and giving customers the ability to arrive alive.

Problem:
Both our companies have a common goal of educating the youth, for they are our future. Your E-Rate program is crucially important and valuable in educating our nation’s next generation of leader and innovators how powerful, beneficial, and important technology is. We would like to partner together to teach them how to use such an amazing tool but also how to use it responsibly to avoid distracted driving. To date the Utah Traffic Fatalities is at a count of 204 with your help, we believe we can substantially lower that number.

Solution:
We have great confidence in this partnership that both organizations are dedicated to bettering lives and enriching communities locally and nationwide. With having traveling workshops, seminars, and marketing and ad campaigns we believe together we will be one step closer to reaching our goal of zero fatalities.

Capabilities:
Zero Fatalities is a national non-profit organization that values the safety and lives of the members of its communities locally and nationally. Our goal and our message is to prevent distracted driving to dramatically decrease the number of fatalities related to the issue. Zero Fatalities consists of a large team ranging from business men, to stay at home moms but each individual has been negatively affected by distracted driving and wholeheartedly assists in education and prevention. Together we are attempting to reach our goal of zero fatalities.

Budget:
Based on the Annual Revenue Report of 2010 your company grossed at $63,400,000,0000(billion?) we are asking for $1,000,000 to assist us in continuing this important message across the state and nation. Our budget will be used to assist in traveling education programs, seminars, marketing and ad campaigns that will be see across the nation. Verizon’s well know brand stands for quality products and services for a great value to strengthen communities through communication. We anticipate the return on the investment to double in product value based on this common goal.

Conclusion:
We look forward to co-creating a safer future for our youth through responsibly using technology and preventing driving with distractions, aiming towards zero fatalities, a goal we can all live with. We will be in contact with in the week. Please contact

Dear Ms. Reader,

After reviewing your application I am pleased to inform you that you are being reviewed by our communications team to be brought on as a social media director. This is a very important aspect of our public relations department. Before submitting your application to the board however, I would like to make a few suggestions.
As the social media director of our company it is very important that you have a diverse knowledge of many social media outlets. I have been able to see that you have accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Your Facebook seems to be well used but your Twitter was only created in September and you have only posted a total of 28 tweets in that time. Please show us that you have skills on other sites such as Blogger, Stumble Upon, and Google Plus. We would also like to see more activity on your Twitter account.
Your Facebook allowed me to find out that you was born on August 19, 1990, you are a student at Utah State University, you work at El Sol and you are currently in a relationship. You are taking part in the Occupy Logan movement which means you are most likely interested in politics to some degree. This could cause a problem with our company. We like to remain very neutral when it come to politics so that we can represent a variety of clients without causing any conflict.
After going through your boards on Pinterest I have found that you love tattoos and have a board for pinning new ideas. As far as your career is involved I would like to remind you that we are always dressed in a conservative fashion and all tattoos bust be covered while you are at work. Other than that, I think many of your pins were great.
When Googling your name I was able to see that you had reserved a study room in the Merrill-Cazier Library on November 13th for 120 minutes. This shows me that you are a dedicated student. I’m sure that your discipline in your studies will transfer over into your career and be a benefit to our company.
Once again, thank you for submitting your application. You should be hearing from us in regards to the position within the week.

Sincerely,

Annie Grace Jackson

Social Media: Legal

I just discovered a "Social Networking Law Blog" focusing on the interaction between social media and the law.
A recent post was written about a woman in New Jersey who created a fake FaceBook profile for her ex-boyfriend in order to post things to hurt his reputation. She made remarks about him having STD's, calling prostitutes and using drugs. These remarks were clearly defamatory and once she was discovered she was taken to court.
"The New Jersey Code of Criminal Justice defines the offense of impersonation/identity theft to include "impersonat[ing] another or assuming a false identity and do[ing] an act in such assumed character or false identity . . . to injure or defraud another."
She has tried to get the case dismissed in saying that there is no mention of electronic communications but the judge has decided to go forward with it.
I thought this was very interesting to read about.
Laws based on the internet are still so new that many people are unaware of the consequences that can come from abusing the privilege to use the internet.
It will be interesting to see what comes of this case.

This article, called Social Media Policies for Legal Types gives great incite into what is legally appropriate and not appropriate as far as social media goes in the business and professional world. Are professionals allowed to have a personal life on the internet?
Harvard's Law Guidelines state:
“As a general matter, you may post content freely to your blog and to those of others, so long as the content is not illegal, obscene, defamatory, threatening, infringing of intellectual property rights, invasive of privacy or otherwise injurious or objectionable."

There is still so much to learn and change when it comes to social media and the law. The internet is an ever-expanding social outlet that is going to continue to grow throughout our lifetimes. It will be interesting to see what comes from it.

Social Media: Apps

RIM Says Sorry With Free Apps
Apps may be the greatest things to ever happen to Smart Phones. They are, without a doubt, the reason that Smart Phones are as popular as they are. Let's be honest, who doesn't love to pass the time playing "Angry Birds" or checking FaceBook from your mobile device?
A few weeks ago, when the iPhone 4S was released, some of the services of BlackBerry shut down for customers in the US, Europe, India and the middle east. To make up for their poor service, RIM is offering free apps to their customers. Some of these include:
  • The Sims 3
  • Bejeweled
  • N.O.V.A.
  • Texas Hold’em Poker 2
  • Bubble Bash 2
  • Photo Editor Ultimate
  • DriveSafe.ly Pro
  • iSpeech Translator Pro
  • Drive Safe.ly Enterprise
  • Nobex Radio Premium
  • Shazam Encore
  • Vlingo Plus: Virtual Assistant
The free Apps don't exactly make up for the lack of cell phone service but hey, who doesn't like free stuff?

Angry Birds is one of the most popular and most well-known Apps on smart phones. All over the world people spend hours upon hours slinging birds into blocks. The idea seems silly, but if you haven't played it, I promise you will be addicted once you try.
Rovio Mobile is about to release the latest version of the game that is said to be "a whole new adventure."
If you are interested in watching a clip of the new game to get a little preview of what is to come, go to this article.

Search Engine Optimization

Geotagging uses GPS technology to trace back to the exact place where a photo or a message or any type of social media was taken. It allows you to go back through old items that are saved to a phone or a camera and trace back to the location in which they were created.
In this article I found called Travel Tech: A Traveler’s guide to Geotagging by Shawn Low you learn the benefits and problems to retagging.
If you are ever going though your phone and drawing a blank as to where you were when you took a certain photo, geotagging can help you go back and find where it was taken. It is also a helpful way to organize your photos so that in the future when you are searching for a specific image you can simply go back and search the location and find what you are looking for.
Many businesses have begun using geotracking in their store to generate conversation about their business. If people can share images and check i
Linknto a business then you have a quick and easy way to create interest.
The main issue with geotracking is that it is a very easy way to attract a stalker. By submitting anything and everything you do to the internet and allowing others to see where you are at all hours of the day then it is easy for others to stalk your life.
The concept is still fairly new and many people are not even aware of its existence. In the future we will most likely see many new changes.

"Geotagging
is the term given to the adding of geographical metadata to photos, videos, tweets, websites and other media. This ' metadata ' can include longitude and latitude, and other attributes such as altitude." (Web 2.0 for Rookies: Geotagging)
"You can geotag photos, which is a fancy way of saying that you can embed geographical metadata into your digital photos."
Many people don't understand the implications of using Geotagging. It is a very new technology that has not been fully explored. It seems like such a simple concept but by allowing followers to view your every move you can set yourself up for stalkers.

Cupcakes For Fall
Temptation Cupcake brings out their Fall flavors

LOGAN, Utah- Temptation Cupcake, a locally owned bakery is now releasing their popular Fall flavors. The business, located on the corner of 1000 North and Main Street, attracts costumers from all over the valley with it’s unique merchandise: cupcakes.

“Our entire business is based around cupcakes, it’s as simple as that. We make a specific amount every morning and when we sell them all, we are done for the day. This way our costumers know they are always eating a freshly baked cupcake.” said Temptation employee, Annabelle Jones.

The owners of the business have a great relationship with their costumers and encourage a “small town”, personal affiliation. They regularly take suggestions and are always thinking of new ways to engage the customers in their business. This month they are holding a contest for the most creative Fall flavor ideas. Costumers are encouraged to go into the store with flavor entries which will then be sorted through and voted on. Winners will receive a free dozen cupcakes. The contest will be held from October 24 through November 5.

Temptation Cupcake was founded in June 2010 by the McMurdie family in Logan, Utah. It is the only store owned by the McMurdie’s. The baker makes a specific amount of cupcakes each morning before the store opens at 10 and the business stays open until the cupcakes are sold out each night.

Smart Investing For Cache Valley Citizens

Hello Emilie,

I was recently reading one of your economical articles and I realized many of the points you addressed had to do with the way Americans are only living off of their active income rather than investing and providing a passive income as support. This idea made me think of just how beneficial investing can be. The problem many of your readers are faced with today is just the fact that they are not sufficiently educated on how to best invest their money. This is where I thought I could be of help to that audience.

I am currently working on the public relations for the Cache Valley Area Investors Association (CVAIA). Our group was formed as a help tool, a place where Cache Valley locals can come to learn more about investing and how to responsibly handle their money.

Your latest article generated many comments from readers interested in learning more about their finances. I feel that writing a piece in your paper addressing CVAIA and informing people about us and how they can use us as a resource would be very beneficial. Financial independence is a hot topic in our society today, one that deserves all the press it can get. Our organization is committed to building a better financial future for all those who are interested in learning more.

Cache Valley Area Investors Association (CVAIA) teaches people how to increase passive income. CVAIA embraces the Law of Attraction, Law of Abundance, and Law of Exchange. CVAIA began in August 2007 and now has members from many geographical locations and from all walks of life. The members come together with the same belief: That education mitigates the risks of investing.

Social Media: Distance Communication Tools

I recently read an article called Can Skype Beat the Hype? Written in 2005, two years after Skype had first been created. It was interesting to read this article and hear the predictions they had for the still new program. The entire article discusses whether or not Skype is just a fad or if it will really become a useful tool in social media. I liked looking back and reading this and realizing just how much Skype has grown. Back in 2005 I had no idea what Skype was, I had never even heard of it. I am pretty sure I created my first Skype account back in 2008 and even then, at 5 years old, it still seemed so new. Now, in 2011, it is a well known media tool that is used for many different purposes. Some use it simply to chat with people in different locations, some use it for interviews, the list goes on and on but the basic idea is just to bring people who could not meet in person, together.
I had no idea just how many people used Skype. When the program was only 2 years old they already had over 47 million users. That is a very quick growth for a new tool. “Skype now has a cult following, but the challenge is going to be marketing it mainstream.. It is a techie delight that makes PC-to-PC calls. Whether it can make the leap to the big leagues will depend on shedding its image as primarily a geek thing.” says Xavier Dreze, marketing professor at Wharton.

The second article I read was called Skype, the Web Phone Giant, Brings Cheap Calls to Cellular by Brad Stone. This article discussed the possibilities of calling mobile devices from your computer, over the internet, using Skype. To some this is a new concept so I will briefly explain it; using Skype you can enter any mobile phone number you can call that phone number using your internet access and talk for just cents to the minute. It was reported in 2009 that over 400 million people are now using Skype as a communication tool.
This article also discussed when Skype released its cell phone applications. You can now long on and access your Skype right from your smart phone using WiFi or your carriers internet.

Social Media: Viral Videos

My favorite viral videos:

According to The Secret Strategies Behind Many "Viral" Videos by Dan, almost all videos with over 100,000 views did not get that many viewers on their own.
This article goes over nine key strategies that professionals use to help make videos go viral.
1. Not all the videos that you watch online are what they seem to be. If they go viral, someone probably meant for that to happen.
2. There are a few key things that will help make a video go big:
  • Make it short: 15-30 seconds is ideal; break down long stories into bite-sized clips
  • Design for remixing: create a video that is simple enough to be remixed over and over again by others. Ex: “Dramatic Hamster”
  • Don’t make an outright ad: if a video feels like an ad, viewers won’t share it unless it’s really amazing. Ex: Sony Bravia
  • Make it shocking: give a viewer no choice but to investigate further. Ex: “UFO Haiti”
  • Use fake headlines: make the viewer say, “Holy shit, did that actually happen?!” Ex: “Stolen Nascar”
  • Appeal to sex: if all else fails, hire the most attractive women available to be in the video. Ex: “Yoga 4 Dudes”
3.How to get viewed is obviously the most important part of this process. How will people find out about this video? The best way to do this is by reaching out to a vast amount of mediums. Get attention from blogs, facebook, youtube, twitter, the list goes on and on.

The rest of the steps continue to spill on secrets for how to make a video viral with interesting ideas such as adding thumbnails, or creating some type of controversy in the comment area.

The article was very interesting. Before reading this I had absolutely no idea how much work went into making a video go viral. Learning all these new tips made me want to try it. But, reading some of the stats made me realize just how impossible it actually is to accomplish.

The second article I read was called Viral Video Star Hits Big Screen by Nina Metz.
This article took a completely different perspective on viral videos and how they can be used to gain celebrity for those that are in them.

After Jack Rebney had a video go viral by accident he became famous. The outtakes of a commercial he filmed 20+ years ago were posted to YouTube and became a hit. Now film directors are interested in making a documentary of his life. The 80 year old man never had any idea that his crazy out takes would ever win him so much fame.

I loved reading this and thinking how crazy and one in a million it would be for something like this to happen to me or someone that I know.

Final Press Release: Cause Promotion

Financial Independence Is Achievable For All
Cache Valley club teaches community about smart spending

LOGAN, Utah- Financial Independence is one thing that many Cache Valley residents, and Americans in general, believe is almost impossible. The idea that you could manage your funds in a way that benefits your lifestyle and allows you to work as you please seems like a dream come true. But it may be much more manageable than just a dream.

A new idea of living off of passive income rather than an active income has allowed many to achieve the goals they striven for in life while working in a career they love. One of these people is Preston Parker, the founder and president of Cache Valley Area Investors Association (CVAIA) he believes that: “Financial independence happens when your passive income is greater than your expenses.” Passive income is when you have money coming to you without doing anything, planning has already been done such as in investments.

A good way to understand how far you are from being financially stable is to ask yourself; "How long could I last if I just didn’t show up to work anymore? When your passive income is greater than your expenses, you can last forever. So now you get to do a job that you love."

According to Parker, students in their twenty's now should be able to achieve this by the time they are about 35. But, to get to that point you have to live below your means. Spend less than you bring in. If you do that for 5
years all of the sudden you have money that you can invest.

Anyone interested in becoming financially independent can begin by reading books such as Rich Dad Poor Dad, or The Millionaire Next Door. Author Dave Ramsey once said: "If you want something you've never had, you'll have to do something you've never done."

As Parker put it,
“GET OUT OF THE RAT RACE… by becoming financially independent, then you get to play the fun games in life.”

Along with Parker, CVAIA has 4 other board members. If you are interested in attending a CVAIA meeting they are held every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Thursday of the month at the Chamber of Commerce. More information and contact information can be found at Facebook.com/cvaia.

If people learn the right mentality and approaches to investing, they can be successful in what they desire. People should be able to spend their time doing something they love, not just a job that provides and income. Passive income largely make this possible. There are many organizations with the stated goal of helping people understand the relationship between assets, liabilities, income, expenses. They practice the methods found in the ideologies of books including Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Wealthy Barber, The Millionaire Next Door, Atlas Shrugged, The Automatic Millionaire, and The Secret.

Cache Valley Area Investors Association (CVAIA) teaches people how to increase passive income. CVAIA embraces the Law of Attraction, Law of Abundance, and Law of Exchange. CVAIA began in August 2007 and now has members from many geographical locations and from all walks of life. The members come together with the same belief: That education mitigates he risks of investing.

Social Media: Location Based

A location based program is basically an online site that allows access through a mobile device. For example you can update your Twitter right from your phone without even being near a computer. Location based programs allow users to use their geographical locations in their updates and onto the programs you are using. Users of the connecting sites can track where their friends or followers are by identifying with the location linked with their profiles.
Two specific sites that are popular location based programs are Facebook and Google. The first article I found related to this topic was Facebook's location-based programs mean more setting adjustments for users by Seth Liss.
This article discussed the issue that Facebbok users are able to “check-in” and “tag” their friends in various locations without permission. This can be a very dangerous and scary feature that users need to pay more attention to. Does this feature simply promote stalking? Every time someone looks at your Facebook profile they can follow every place that you have been. I’m sure the feature was created to be taken lightly and used so friends could find you but has Facebook gone too far now?
Allowing the world to know where you are at every waking hour is not necessarily a safe feature. However, users do have the option of disabling their GPS and forbidding their friends to tag them in “places”. The problem is, many Facebook users don’t realize that they have this option or they don’t even understand how “places” works.
Another scary idea behind the GPS feature is the fact that it can trigger burglaries. There have been documented cases of homes being broken into after someone “checks-in” away from their house.
All in all, just be sure you are aware of this feature. It can be used in a fun, easy going way but be sure you don’t let it backfire on you.
The second location based program I read about was Google. The article was
Official Google Latitude iPhone app returns to the Store by Martin Bryant. This article was very similar to the Facebook one. Google now has a new App. For the iphone called “Latitude”. Like Facebook Places, it allows users to check-in at various locations by using their GPS. You can find out where each of your friends are in real-time.
Through this site you are provided with a list of your friends. By simply clicking on them you can see their where-abouts and see the history of where they have been recently. The site is also connected with Google Maps which allows you to send direction of how to get to your location out to any of your friends. The site also provides you with an email so you can communicate with each other easily.
Location based sites are a brilliant idea and they have enormous benefits to their users. It is just important that users understand the repercussions. Always be smart about using a location based site.

Social Media: Traditional Views

The first article I read was 10 Ways LinkNewspapers Are Using Social Media to Save the Industry by Woody Lewis.
“These days, everyone knows that one of the hottest stories any newspaper can cover is that of its own demise.” What used to be the only source of world wide news, is now becoming the last source. So how do newspaper companies manage to stay afloat? By using social media of course. Everyone knows that if you want to stay in business then you have to use the latest trends to stay popular.
Twitter has played a major part in this social media trend. It is so easy for an online journalist to link their article, with a killer headline, to a Twitter post. This enables followers to scan through the different stories and pick and choose which ones interest them. Twitter is by far the fastest, and potentially most popular way to get news. It only takes a matter of seconds to send information out worldwide. And if your job is to report the news then you better learn how to Tweet.
Advertising on the internet is quick, easy and it works. There are hundreds of different outlets that can be used to promote something. For example, you can make videos, post ads, create a blog, plan an event, make a group, etc. This allows advertisers to reach millions of viewers through countless mediums which may not have been reached without the internet and social media.
The use of social media can be used to help educate those who may never have been informed on world news in the past. It allows journalists to reach a whole new audience and to target a different generation that may have been ignored in the past.
It is a fact that with changing technology newspapers must change as well.

My second article was called How Traditional Entertainment Can Use Social Media by David Card.
The smartest thing that a big company can do these days is to combine their products or ideas with popular social media tools. For example, by encouraging your costumers to “check-in” at your location on Facebook is a great way to let your costumers friends know that they use your product or are associated with your company. It is a simple way to use word-of-mouth promotion. If your costumers friends hear about you then they are more likely to come visit your business.
Discussion boards on Twitter promote talk about your product. This allows more and more people to seek information about your company and encourages more costumers or viewers.
All types of social media allow costumers to act as the promoters or advertisers for companies they use. All it takes is one good review on a popular blog to send costumers through the door.
The first step to utilizing these social media tools is to have a good understanding of them. Our generation lives on the internet so naturally we are going to use it to help us decide where to eat, shop, play, etc.
